Programming language project called Go By Google

Google software luminaries such as Unix Co-creator Ken Thompson believe that they can help boost both computing power and programmers’ abilities with an experimental programming language project called Go.

The language has been tested internally at Google, but is still at an experimental stage, so the search giant is releasing it as open-source code in the hope that it will get help with its future development. “We developed Go because we had become a bit frustrated with how difficult software development has become in the last 10 years or so,”

said Rob Pike,

Principal Software Engineer at Google.

So far, Google’s Go project consists of the programming language, compilers to convert what programmers write into software that computers can run and a runtime package that endows Go programs with a number of built-in features. It’s most similar to C and C++, but, Pike said, it employs modern features and has enough versatility that it could even be used within web browsers, reports CNET News.

Go aims to improve on the way existing programming languages manage dependencies, which are the software components that applications re-use, such as libraries, Pike said. The language is also designed to handle multiprocessor work particularly well, thanks to its concurrent programming model.

Google started working on Go about two years ago and devoted a team to work on it full time about a year ago. It was conceived as a language for systems programming, such as web servers, storage systems and databases. However, Google is open to seeing it branch out into other areas. At this point, Go is not used in any user-facing Google service or application, since it still has to mature, which is where external programmers come into the picture. “We need better libraries and tools, and the open-source community is great at helping you with things like that,” Pike said.

By creating a new programming language, Google continues making inroads into the realm of computing building blocks, prompted by a sense of urgency at making them better. This motivation has also led Google to embark on developing the Android mobile operating system, the Chrome PC browser and the still-unreleased Chrome operating system.

Ex-ISRO engineer’s iPhone game achieves highest download

T. Harikumar, who quit his job as an engineer with the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) to start Trivandrum based software firm Travancore Analytics, has developed the snakes and ladders board game for iPhone and iTouch.

“The Apple company after seeing the game asked us to re-do it as it had the iPhone logo. We removed it and the game was released on September 27. In a short span of time, the game has achieved more than 250,000 downloads – the highest for an iPhone application developed by any Indian software firm,” said T. Harikumar. More than 70 percent of downloads have been from Canada, the UK, and the U.S.

Anyone who has an iPhone or an iTouch can log on to iTunes website and download the game for free. The free version of the game allows the user to be one of the players, while iPhone itself takes the role of the second player.

“We have given it a real feel. When the dice appears on screen, just shake the phone as you would do it while playing on the board game, and the dice shows the number,” said Harikumar. The company currently has 22 employees and is mostly into image technology and processing.

75 percent Indian engineers unemployable: Nasscom

Indian IT firms reject 90 percent of college graduates and 75 percent of engineers who apply for jobs because they are not good enough to be trained, according to Nasscom.

Wipro employs 95,000, Infosys 1,05,000 and TCS 1,43,000. Of the Fortune 500, only Wal-
Mart in America adds more people annually than either Infosys or TCS.

Last year Infosys hired 28,231 people, including 18,000 graduates paid Rs.3 lakh a year. This year they will hire 20,000 at Rs 3.25 lakh. Infosys is hiring though there isn’t enough business. Currently, 30,000 people at Infosys are ‘benched’.

Why are they still hiring and raising salaries? Because they cannot find competent people and due to this reason, this year Infosys increased its training of employees to 29 weeks. That’s seven months of training. Why do they need so much training? And why is the quality of applicants so poor?

Infosys spends twice as much as its American competitors on training, four percent of revenue. Nine half-literates are produced by our colleges, by Nasscom’s numbers, for every graduate of passable quality. What is Nasscom’s solution to this? It wants government to boost college enrolment from 10 percent of those in secondary school, to 25 percent. Nasscom knows that this will only increase the number of job applicants, not the quality, but there’s no other solution.

India produces three million graduates, but Nasscom says that next year it will see a shortage of 500,000 graduates, because incompetents will swamp the rest.

Beware of the leaked version of Google Chrome OS

Google asked people not to believe the leaked version of Chrome operating system. Recently, Google announced that it is coming up with its own OS, and after that there have been rumors about a leaked version being available for download. The ‘leaked version’ is a fake that is not related to Google at all.

Even a trusted source like Gizmodo has perpetuated the myth that Chrome is available. Its tough when there is so much pressure to be the first to publish a breaking news story. Gizmodo recently reported a story of alleged Chrome operating system screen shots, but later updated the story to state that it was verified as a fake. Gizmodo pushed the story of
the fake download with a story titled Google Chrome OS Now Available, Go Get It .

The number of sites and individuals who are propagating the story is lending credibility to the false rumor. A quick scan of Twitter or a quick search of the Web will lead to all sorts of seemingly reputable sources talking about the availability of the Chrome OS beta. Most of the excitement though can be traced back to Gizmodo. It is a trusted source of breaking tech news and it doesn’t take much for an announcement on Gizmodo to go viral on Twitter and blog sites.

The site in question appears legitimate in so much as it is actually on the google.com domain. The site lists features like a GNOME desktop, Google Picassa integration, and a Flash Player plugin. It comes complete with a few Google logos scattered about.

However, it is actually a product of Google Sites. Basically, someone created a page with Google Sites which points to sites.google.com and populated it with basic information about the Chrome OS which could be extracted from publicly available details Google has shared, then added a link to download some other completely unrelated tool.

To be fair, the site owner did include a disclaimer at the bottom stating “Chrome OS is not related to Google. Service is provided by SUSE Studio. Seethe license.” Google has since disabled the site for violating the Google Sites terms of service.

Chrome sounds like it has promise, although the operating system market is a tough sell that is already filled with dominating players like Microsoft and Apple. Of course, Google hasn’t shied away from head-to-head battles with either of those companies in other arenas like Web search, mobile phone operating systems, or web browsers.

Be patient. The fervor over all things Google is remotely understandable, but Rome wasn’t built in a day. Even Google will take some time to develop an actual operating system. When it is actually available, I am sure you will hear about it.

In the meantime, if a guy in a dark alley whispers that he has an early version of Chrome OS available, there is good reason to be suspicious. Google may have shut down this fake Chrome OS site, but others are sure to follow. If it walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, its probably a duck. Check your sources and exercise some common sense before you rush to download a fake, and potentially malicious, Chrome OS.

iGate to hire 300 professionals by December

New Delhi:

As the software company iGate sees rebound in contract and demand picking up gradually, the company will hire 300 people by December this year. “We will hire 200 people for our software services and 100 for BPO by December to expand our existing operations. We believe there is already revival of demand for IT and BPO services and to
meet that demand we are hiring,” said iGate CEO Phaneesh Murthy.

The company had frozen recruitment earlier this year when recession was at its peak. Murthy said that hiring reflects the slow tapering up of the recession.

Last week, iGate posted a minor increase in its net income for quarter ending September 2009 at $8.9 million. The company had a net income of $8.5 million in the third quarter (Q3) of last year. Revenue from continuing operations, however, declined to $49.1 million during the quarter from $55.4 million made in the corresponding quarter of Financial Year 2008, the company said.

The company added six new customers in the quarter. Its employee base in Q3 fell slightly to 6,380 employees as of September 30, 2009 compared to 6,407 in the same period last year.

Google to launch Chrome OS to challenge Microsoft

Google-to-launch2 Mumbai:

To compete with the entrenched Windows platform, Google is ready to launch a new computer operating system (OS). Initially, the Chrome OS, designed initially for low-cost netbooks, will offer its program code to developers across the globe and create
another ‘open source’ competition for Microsoft.

Google-to-launch2

Regarding threat to Microsoft, Country Head of products in India, Google said, “Windows XP takes ‘forever’ to boot up. I can go down, have my cup of tea and come back, it will be ready as it takes four minutes for it to start. Our OS is not about features. We never said that Chrome will have these five features that the others (Windows, Safari) don’t have. If you look at the way computing has evolved and look at today’s OS, all the popular ones pre-date the Web. People spend 99 percent of their time on browsers, then why is that we are still beholding OS that are 15 years old that were formed with desktop operations in mind? We should move to an application-based system, where it does not matter how many applications are there, boot-up time should be at its minimal. It should be like a TV where you switch it on and voila your programmes start right away. This is really the promise of Google’s OS, Chrome.”

Since the birth of internet in 1969, it has come long way, and today it has become part and parcel of everyone’s life. Goe said, “Today, browsers have become very powerful. For example, look at Google maps and the kind of things you can do with it. It really behaves like a desktop application, although it is fully browser based. And now, we are moving into the next generation which uses the technology of HTML 5 making the browser even more powerful. So, for things that you needed a desktop application like spreadsheets, word documents, modifying photos, etc, you don’t need them anymore. It is all browser based. It can all be enabled within the browser. The HTML 5 technology will support any browser and OS and this will be true for Google’s Chrome as well. We are trying to make an OS that is fine tuned to the browser and supports whatever it needs. A lot of the OS is built on open source software of Linux, we are trying to marry other stuff to give to the user.”

Google is also addressing the local market for search and email in terms of vernacular languages. “We provide search in various Indian languages like Hindi, Telugu, Bengali, etc. However, not all search results are in these languages but are mostly in English. This is based on transliterating where you type the word based on the phonetics and it is converted into the language of the user’s choice. The same with e-mail services,” said Goe.

Interesting facts about PHP: A PHP developer should know

As a PHP developer you should know all these facts. I call them interesting because, almost all points surprised me. Though I am a PHP developer from the past 4 years but didn’t know all these facts.

  1. PHP originally stood for Personal Home Page.
  2. PHP which is now officially known as ‘Hypertext Preprocessor’ was released in the year 1995.
Initially written as a set of Common Gateway Interface (CGI) in ‘C’ (1994).
  3. PHP was originally designed to replace a set of Perl scripts to maintain his Personal Home Pages (also known as PHP).

  4. PHP was originally created by Rasmus Lerdorf in 1995. He wrote the original Common Gateway Interface (CGI) binaries.

  5. Zeev Suraski and Andi Gutmans, two developers at the Technion IIT, rewrote the parser in 1997 and formed the base of PHP 3.

  6. PHP 3 was official launched in June 1998.

  7. Suraski and Gutmans rewrote the PHP 3’s core, producing the Zend Engine in 1999. They also founded Zend Technologies in Ramat Gan, Israel.

  8. On May 22, 2000, PHP 4, powered by the Zend Engine 1.0, was released.

  9. The main implementation of PHP is now produced by The PHP Group and serves as the de facto standard for PHP as there is no formal specification.

  10. On July 13, 2004, PHP 5 was released, powered by the new Zend Engine II. PHP 5 introduced full featured object-oriented programming support. It was there in PHP 3 and PHP 4 but only the basic features.

  11. PHP is free software released under the PHP License, which is incompatible with the GNU General Public License (GPL) due to restrictions on the use of the term PHP.

  12. PHP was originally designed to create dynamic and more interactive web pages. It is the most widely-used, open-source and general-purpose scripting language.

  13. It is possible to use PHP in almost every operating system. PHP can be used in all major operating systems including Linux, Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, and RISC OS.

  14. PHP uses procedural programming or object oriented programming and also a mixture of them.

  15. PHP is installed on over 20 million websites and 1 million web servers.

  16. 75% of Web 2.0 sites are built in PHP.

  17. There are about 5 million PHP developers worldwide.

  18. The latest release of PHP till now is 5.3.0. It was released on Jun 30, 2009. PHP 6 is under development alongside PHP 5.
  19. Major changes include the removal of register_globals, magic quotes, and safe mode. The reason for the removals was that register_globals had given way to security holes, and magic quotes had an unpredictable nature, and was best avoided.

Some of the biggest online brands, such as Facebook, ProProfs, Digg, Friendster, Flickr, Technorati, Walt Disneydeutsche bank and Yahoo! are powered by PHP.
